The Camera USA 2019 National Photography Exhibition opened June 3 in the ground floor galleries of the Naples Art Association. This year’s judging panel issued five Honorable Mentions. Salisbury, Maryland photographer snagged one of them for her 2018 image Milky Way at Low Tide.

Ward shot the photograph early one March morning at Assateague Island National Seashore in Berlin, Maryland. The Milky Way constellation is visible over a lone tree during low tide, with ripples in the sand where the water normally laps.

Assateague Island is a 37 mile long island along the coasts of Maryland and Virginia. Most of the Maryland district is managed by the National Park Service as Assateague Island National Seashore. Over 1 million visitors come to Assateague each year, including the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge located in the Virginia district of Assateague Island. Visitors come to relax, recreate and immerse themselves in the resource. Popular activities include walking the beach, swimming, surfing, wildlife viewing, birding, crabbing, fishing and kayaking.

Passionate about photography, Ward travels as much as possible shooting anything and everything of interest. Night photography, however, is her favorite. To see more of her portfolio, please visit http://carol-ward.squarespace.com/Maryland.
