SoDis doing virtual reading of ‘Sordid Lives’ on May 19

The Laboratory Theater of Florida will present a SoDis (socially distant) reading of Del Shores’ cult classic Sordid Lives on Tuesday, May 19, at 7:00 p.m. on its Facebook and YouTube pages. Playwright Del Shores is offering The Lab this production as a fundraiser for the theater while the theater is dark.

Chaos erupts in Winters, Texas, when Peggy, a good Christian woman, hits her head on the sink and bleeds to death after tripping over her lover’s wooden legs in a motel room. The author of Daddy’s Dyin’ (Who’s Got the Will?) brings you “a black comedy about white trash” that was nominated for over thirty awards during its long run in Los Angeles.

“[This play by] the master of Texas Comedy…is maybe funnier than Daddy’s Dyin’. His colorful eccentrics are dead-on, teetering on a Bowie knife’s edge between the hilarious improbable and the achingly real.” – The Los Angeles Times

Directed by Annette Trossbach, this SoDis reading brings back several of the original Lab Theater production: Shelley Sanders (Bitsy Mae), Stacy Peres (Sissy), Cindi Homberg (LaVonda), Brian G. Linthicum (G.W. Nethercott), and Patricia Clopton (Juanita). And the director of The Lab’s 2017 production, Scott Carpenter, steps in as Odell.

Joining the Fort Myers cast are members of the 2017 Denton, Texas cast: Melisa Brown (Latrelle), Polly Maynard (Noleta), Alex Rodriguez (Ty) and Doug Fowler (Brother Boy).

The remaining members of the cast are from Southwest Florida, including Cape Coral and Naples: Robert Armstrong (Wardell), Victoria Diebler (Doctor Eve) and Casey Davis (Preacher).

With theaters around the world dark to help curb the spread of the global pandemic, artists are anxious to get back to performing. While the loss of at least four months of income is daunting, the loss of artistic opportunities is also devastating. To fill this need for community and art, the SoDis (socially-distant) Theater Project was born.

This performance is free, but please consider donating to the theater so that Lab can keep its Ghostlight burning while the stage remains dark. Please visit http://paypal.me/LabTheaterFL.

Thank you. Please enjoy the performance!
