Bishop Verot High performs medley from ‘Mary Poppins’ at this year’s HSMTA
The High School Musical Theatre Awards take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 at the Barbara B Mann Performing Art Hall at FSW. Started in 2008 by Barbara Mann GM Scott Saxson, the High School Musical Theatre Awards celebrate local high school actors, orchestras, their musical productions and the hard work those students do every year.
Eight area schools are taking part in the Awards this year,
which are modeled after the Tony Awards. Bishop Verot is excited to be performing a medley of beloved songs from Mary Poppins, which it presented in March.
Based on the novel by PL Travers and the 1964 Disney film, the musical features favorite songs such as “Spoonful of Sugar” and “Step in Time,” as
Bert narrates the journey of the Banks Family, which is unexpectedly brought together by a magical nanny by the name of Mary Poppins. Mary introduces Jane and Michael Banks to several colorful characters – Neleus, Mrs. Corry, the Bird Woman, and Valentine – who help them see the world in a different way. By invoking nostalgia, engaging our imaginations, and weaving in a generous heaping
of joy, Mary Poppins takes us all on the adventure of a lifetime. Like JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy, it is one of those rare stories that has touched multiple generations, albeit in very different ways.
Under the direction of Theater Director/Teacher Lisa Clark, Bishop Verot Theater performs a variety of
straight plays and musicals that feature in excess of 50 students. Past productions have included How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Addams Family Musical, Beauty and the Beast and Grease: The School Version. Bishop Verot is a member of the SWFL Theatrical Society,
and Bishop Verot High School Thespian Troupe 6159 is a part of the International Thespian Society, an organization that recognizes students for their exceptional participation in theater.
Also participating in this year’s HSMTA are Canterbury School, Cypress Lake High School, Ida Baker High School, Island Coast High School, Lehigh Senior High School, North Fort Myers High School and Oasis High School.
