Play:  Lifespan of a Fact

Playwrights: Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell and Gordon Farrell

Genre:  Comedy

Synopsis: Based on the true story of D’Agata’s essay “What Happens There,” The Lifespan of a Fact is centered on a fact-checker by the name of Jim Fingal, a recent Harvard grad who majored in English. He works for one of the best magazines in the country, but whose readership is declining. Fingal’s boss has given him a big assignment: to apply his skill to a groundbreaking essay written by legendary author John D’Agata. But Fingal quickly discovers that D’Agata made up a lot of the “facts” contained in his article. What starts out professional quickly becomes profane – as D’Agata and Fingal struggle to navigate the boundaries of literary nonfiction and the importance of truth in journalism. The Lifespan of a Fact is a thought-provoking exploration of truth, ethics, and the nature of writing itself.

Historical Note:  The eponymous book was adapted into a Broadway play in 2018 starring Daniel Radcliffe, Cherry Jones and Bobby Cannavale. The Players Circle production marks the play’s Florida premiere.
