Focus on photographer Lance Long’s Camera USA 2018 entry ‘Dust from Dance’

One of the images in Camera USA 2018 is Lance Long’s Dust from Dance.

A portrait and dance photographer, Long is often inspired by the technical pursuit of an image.

“The dancer’s grace, beauty and elegance create the inspiration for photographs with mood and expression,” declares Long, who stresses that dance photography is a collaborative effort with the dancer to create a still photograph that illustrates a single moment from an artistic movement.

“I explore the potential of a body’s movement within a space, pushing the dancer’s boundaries and architecting their sculptural physicality into a defining still photograph.”

Long grew up with film and still photography as just one aspect of a rich visual environment. “My memories are visual more than anything else. For years, I spent time photographing the details and beauty around the world, often with an absence of people in my photographs while exploring those environments. Now, I’m inspired by photographing dance, technically and emotionally. To showcase the moments of a dancer’s movement, I present work in a pure, bold style to capture the sculptural beauty and dramatic form.”
