‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ flies into Florida Rep for five shows

Peter and the Starcatcher Art 2Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable unnamed orphan comes to be Peter Pan, “The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up.” From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair … and the bonds of friendship, duty and love. And you can catch this amazing grown-up prequel flies into Florida Rep’s Artstage Studio Theatre for five performances May 24-28.

The play is a wildly theatrical adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s best-selling novels that was conceived for the stage by directors, Roger Rees and Alex Timbers and written by Rick Elice, with music by Wayne Barker. The effort earned them Tony, Tina, Lucille Lortel and Inaugural Off Broadway Alliance Award nominations and a rave review by New York Times theater critic Ben Brantley.

The production features a company of Florida Rep’s finest young performers. Joined by Mentor Actor for Florida Rep’s Intern Actors, Alexis Slocum (who plays the role of Aster), the cast consists of 15 students, ages 11-18, from high schools all over Southwest Florida portrays more than 100 unforgettable characters.

“They’re onstage at all times and not only play multiple characters but control the sound effects, set shifts and also play inanimate objects like doors, windows, docks, and boxes,” reports Education Director Kody C. Jones. “This truly is Peter Pan like you’ve never seen before.”

The cast has been rehearsing for the past two months with working theatre professionals. In addition to their lines, they’ve been learning staging, fight choreography and music.

Jones not only directs, but choreographs the fight scenes. Joining Kody in the production is an expert team that includes assistant director Christina DeCarlo, music director Brady Wease, set designer, Jordan Moore (“Oliver! The Musical,” “Romeo and Juliet”), lighting designer John Kiselica, prop designer Jesseca Terhaar, and costume designer Alexandria Vazquez.

Space is limited, as is the run, so get tickets early.
