Lab’s 24-Hour Challenge shifts to screenwriting in 2020 due to pandemic

Lab Theater’s heralded 24-Hour Playwriting Project has shifted gears this year due to COVID-19. In a pandemic-related twist, Lab will be conducting a 24-hour screenwriting project instead of a 24-hour playwriting challenge. “It’s going to be a fun, new way of being creative in this medium as well as a fundraiser for the theater,” states Lab.

“We are seeking four writers who will get their prompts (via Zoom) on Friday, November 20,” touts Lab Theater Artistic Director Annette Trossbach. “They will each write a 5 to 8 minute single shot movie script. They will virtually meet with their directors/camera(wo)men on Saturday morning and produce a final script. The actors, whose identity will remain secret as in the past, will arrive in shifts to rehearse and shoot their single shot movie on Saturday.”

The Saturday commitment is less than three hours this year.

Everything will be put together with credits and available online at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, 21 November. The community is, as always, invited to judge and to donate towards their favorite video.

In addition to the writing, this year’s wrinkle places a premium on the cinematography and acting for the camera.

“Though much of this work is not in person, it’s very much a team effort and we are excited to share it with you,” Trossbach adds. “We are seeking two writers and four directors who will also shoot!

There’s room for eight actors in total, or two actors per team.

EACH PAIR OF ACTORS must already be living together or must fulfill strict pandemic isolation protocols in order to participate in person. Directors must also fulfill Lab’s exacting pandemic protocol. More information about that is online at Lab’s website. If you’re interested in writing, shooting/directing, or acting, please DM Annette Trossbach, who will be delighted to answer your questions.

As in years past, the prompt, the setting, the themes, props, sound effects, etc., are under lock and key until the evening of November 20. And the identity of the directors and actors will remain secret until the morning of the 21st.

October 20, 2020.
