Play:   The Legend of Georgia McBride

Playwright: Matthew Lopez

Synopsis: When one door closes, another opens. Young Casey loses his job as an Elvis impersonator, but then a rare and unique performance opportunity presents itself when a drunken drag queen collapses before her show. Coached up by seasoned drag performer Miss Tracy Mills, Casey takes the stage. What ensues is an exotic, erotic, chaotic, hypnotic, and melodic drag spectacular filled with tons of glitz and glamour, humor, warmth and love. It’s a story about how we discover who we truly are and the struggles that often occur as we navigate that journey.

What the Critics Say:

  • “Stitch-in-your-side funny…full of sass and good spirits.” —NY Times.
  • Casey serves as a proxy for straight audience members who don’t get how and why drag is about more than just funny guys in crazy outfits, and Lopez opts to focus on one big, humane message — delivered in a stirring monologue by Rexy — rather than to unpack the scenario’s deeper dimensions of privilege and prejudice.
