The High School Musical Theatre Awards take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 at the Barbara B Mann Performing Art Hall at FSW. Started in 2008 by Barbara Mann GM Scott Saxson, the High School Musical Theatre Awards celebrate local high school actors, orchestras, their musical productions and the hard work those students do every year. Among the eight area schools taking part in the Awards this year is Island Coast High School.

Island Coast High School Theatre Department performed Mean Girls: High School Edition on April 18-20. Island Coast will bring a medley of songs and scenes from Mean Girls to this year’s High School Musical Theatre Awards.

Here’s the storyline: Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George? But when Cady and her friends devise a “Revenge Party” to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung.

Adapted from Tina Fey’s hit 2004 film, Mean Girls was nominated for a staggering 12 Tony Awards.

“The show was the largest one that Island Coast Theatre Department has done in several years, with 37 scene changes, dozens of quick changes, and so much more,” notes Theatre Director Rachel Davis.

Also participating in this year’s HSMTA are Bishop Verot High School, Canterbury School, Cypress Lake High School, Ida S. Baker High School, Lehigh Senior High School, North Fort Myers High School and Oasis High School.
