Dating Amber (originally titled Beards) is an Irish dramedy directed by David Freyne. The 92-minute film follows Eddie, a closeted gay teen training for a cadet exam to join the army and follow in his father’s footsteps. After homophobic taunting from his small town classmates leads to a disastrous attempt at proving his heterosexuality, Eddie is approached by Amber, a fellow closeted outcast who is also tired of being tormented at school. Lola Petticrew plays the part of Amber.

Besides Dating Amber, Petticrew is known for A Bump Along the Way (2019) and Shadows (2020). Other roles include Orla Healy in the TV mini-series Three Families (2021), Izzy Brannick in the TV mini-series Bloodlands (2021), Julie in Here Are the Young Men (2020), Lucy in the television series My Left Nut (2020), Toni in The Return of the Yuletide Kid (2019), Allegra in A Bump Along the Way (2019), Laura in the TV series Come Home (2018), Carla in Next of Kin (2018) and Cara in the short film Sparrow.

Petticrew also has roles in two projects that are in post-production, Wolf and Anne Boleyn (in which she plays Jane Seymour).

“I think you learn from very single person you work with,” states the actor. “I feel like I’ve gained something from every person in every project—from the cast to the crew, learning about how each department works and how all the cogs make the machine run smoothly. I’m very lucky to have worked with a plethora of open and honest people who have taught me so much without even knowing it.”

And that includes screenwriter and director David Freyne.

“I think David Freyne really allowed us to be free and instinctive and ignited a spark in us,” Petticrew remarks. “He is INCREDIBLE and I would work with him every day for the rest of my life.”

Dating Amber will be screened by the Bonita International Film Festival on Saturday, May 22 at 12:30 p.m.
