  2. Amanda was born on February 20, which is the single most historic day in Fort Myers history. In addition to it being Amanda’s birthday, Ponce de Leon set out on this day in 1521 on his fateful voyage to Southwest Florida; two companies of artillery established Fort Myers on the shores of the Caloosahatchee River in 1850; Union soldiers won the Battle of Fort Myers in 1865; Fort Myers entered into the modern era when the railroad finally came to town in 1904; and the first bridge spanning the Caloosahatchee River was completed in Olga in 1915.
