Join Fort Myers Theatre for intimate Jonathan Larson musical ‘tick, tick … Boom!’

Fort Myers Theatre is producing Jonathan Larson’s loving ode to Broadway musicals and the artists who create them, tick, tick … Boom! February 9-11. This is the intimate, autobiographical pop/rock show that led to the Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed 2021 film adaptation for Netflix.

Tick, tick … Boom! tells the story of Jon, a struggling composer whose life seems to be going nowhere. About to turn 30 and still waiting tables for a living,  the prospect that he may never “make it” on Broadway renders  him despondent. The pressure to break out or give up only grows as Jon’s girlfriend, Susan, announces that she wants to get married and move out of the city, and his best friend, Michael, quits acting and finds huge financial success as a Madison Avenue corporate executive. Jon’s new futuristic dystopian musical Superbia has a great workshop but no prospects, and as time ticks by Jon wonders if maybe his friends are right, and it’s time to throw in the towel.

The musical becomes all the more poignant and prescient when you remember that Jonathan Larson died at the age of 35, the night before Rent’s Off Broadway opening night.

Given the short run and limited seating, don’t sleep on getting tickets for this show.
