Play:  Noises Off

Playwright: Michael Frayn

Genre:  Farce; for anyone who has ever worked in the theatre, professional or amateur, or for anyone who has ever wondered at what goes on behind the scenes, Noises Off is both celebration and satire, a loving sendup of the idiosyncrasies that make the theatre such a uniquely human and powerful experience.

Synopsis: This play-within-a-play captures a touring theatre troupe’s production of Nothing On in three stages: dress rehearsal, the opening performance, and a performance towards the end of a debilitating run. Frayne gives us a window into the inner workings of theatre behind the scenes, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the dress rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance. Brimming with slapstick comedy, Noises Off is a delightful backstage farce, complete with slamming doors, falling trousers, and — of course — flying sardines!

Historical Note: Noises Off premiered at the Lyric Theatre in London in 1982, where it was a smash hit and ran for five successful years. It debuted on Broadway in 1983 and ran for more than 500 performances.
