In addition to it being Amanda’s birthday, Ponce de Leon set out on this day in 1521 on his fateful voyage to Southwest Florida; two companies of artillery established Fort Myers on the shores of the Caloosahatchee River in 1850; Union soldiers won the Battle of Fort Myers in 1865; Fort Myers entered into the modern era when the railroad finally came to town in 1904; and the first bridge spanning the Caloosahatchee River was completed in Olga in 1915.
