3     THEATRE PRODUCTIONS

‘Storm in the Barn’ a quintessentially American fable of courage in face of environmental disaster

The Alliance Youth Theatre brings The Storm in the Barn to the Foulds Theatre stage April 12-14. Like many fairy tales, The Storm in the Barn balances darkness and danger with a spirit of optimism and clear moral imperative. The story takes place in Kansas in 1937, during an environmental disaster known today as The Dust Bowl. It began in 1930 when a severe drought seized the Midwest and southern Great Plains. Massive dust storms began the ensuing year. A series of droughts followed. By 1934, an estimated 35 million acres of formerly cultivated land had been rendered useless for farming, while another 125 million acres—an area roughly three-quarters the size of Texas—was rapidly losing its topsoil.

One-woman show, ‘Grounded,’ on stage at Belle Theatre through April 7

George Brant’s one-actor drama, Grounded is on stage at The Belle Theatre in Cape Coral through April 7, 2024. It’s the story of an ace F16 fighter pilot. After becoming pregnant, she’s reassigned to the “chair force,” where she operates drones 12 hours a day, seven days a week from a windowless trailer on an Air Force base in the desert outside Las Vegas. Although she’s now insulated from the dangers of combat missions, she faces a much more insidious problem – keeping the emotional toll of hunting terrorists by day and killing them on command from infiltrating her family life. But as boundaries between the desert where she lives and the desert where she fights begin to blur, she finds herself slipping into the grip of PTSD. Belle Theatre Artistic Director Tyler Young chose Peyton McCarthy to play the role of the beleaguered fighter pilot, Jess.

‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ is more than just another jukebox musical

Beautiful is frequently labeled a jukebox musical because the show features more than a dozen songs from Carole King’s songwriting catalog.

Writer Douglas McGrath chose the songs he did not just because of their popularity.

Each serves as a milestone in King’s progression from a young girl who wrote for the Drifters, Shirelles, Righteous Brothers and Neil Sedaka to one of the most transformative pop-rock singer-songwriters of our times.

“The show itself really encapsulates her growth as a young girl who writes for others and she grows up and she begins to write for herself,” observes Amy Marie McCleary, who directed and choreographed the show for Broadway Palm.

Broadway Palm’s ‘Addams Family’ will have you snapping your fingers for amor

Ah, the intoxicating smell of the graveyard, proclaims Gomez in the opening number of the Addams Family musical. “Once a year, we gather to honor the great cycle life and death. Come, every member of our clan – living, dead, and undecided – and let us celebrate what is to be an Addams.”

This year, the graveyard is located on the main stage of Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre and the musical features all the usual suspects – the flamboyant and flashy Gomez Addams, his lithe and luscious wife, Morticia, Grandmama, Lurch, Cousin Itt and, of course, Uncle Fester, whose ambition is to beat Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and NASA to the lunar surface.

Players Circle’s production of ‘Godspell’ unlike anything audiences have experienced before

Godspell has captivated audiences worldwide with countless performances since its debut in 1971. However, the Players Circle production promises to deliver an experience unlike anything audiences have seen before.

It all starts with the gifted, high-octane cast that Associate Artistic Director Ted Wioncek has assembled for the show.

TheatreZone’s production of ‘Carrie the Musical’ spotlighted on WGCU

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Stephen King’s seminal novel, Carrie. TheatreZone in Naples is celebrating this milestone by producing the rarely-done musical version of the story with an all-star cast and musicians.

The story revolves around a teen in her last year of high school. At home, she must deal with her religious zealot mother, who tells Carrie that she is “special” to keep her isolated from her peers and the sexual culture of youth she views as perverse. At school, Carrie’s peers regard her as an outsider and relentlessly bully her. What they don’t know is that she has telekinetic powers, which they unwittingly release when they pull a cruel prank on her at prom.

Carrie’s principal tormentors arrange to have her named as prom queen. Just as she’s being crowned, they dump a pail of pig’s blood on her from above. In fact, it’s that scene from the 1976 movie starring Cissy Spacek that most people remember. It’s also the reason many people conclude that the story is too bloody. TheatreZone Artistic Director Mark Danni reassures viewers that’s really not the case.

Sage observations about Margaret White from McLean Peterson

McLean Peterson is chilling in the role of Margaret White in TheatreZone’s production of Carrie the Musical.

Carrie is an incredibly well-directed, brilliantly acted and imaginatively staged and choreographed musical. It is also a psychological study of deviant personalities – like that of Carrie’s mother, Margaret White, a seriously damaged soul. Peterson’s portrayal is terribly convincing, a testament to her willingness to embrace her character’s blatant hypocrisy and ability to understand – both cognitively and intuitively – her character’s many contradictions.

4     THE ARTS

Putting Rachel at the Well back together was like solving a puzzle

Art conservator Kelly Ciociola likens Rachel’s restoration to a puzzle. But putting a precious century-old statue back together again requires more than a Junior Mint and a toothpick. It starts with a substantial amount of historical research. Ciociola had worked on the sculpture in 2017, and knew that von Zengen employed a groundbreaking technique to make the cast stone statue.
