‘Curious Incident’ makes professional Southwest Florida premiere on February 16

After a two-year, COVID imposed delay, Players Circle Theatre will bring The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time to the Shell Factory stage beginning February 16. The production marks the play’s professional Southwest Florida premiere.

The play is based on the popular novel by Mark Haddon. Adapted by Simon Stephens, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time follows the story of Christopher Boone, a 15-year-old math savant on the autism spectrum. When he discovers that his neighbor’s dog has been murdered, Christopher sets out to solve the crime. In the course of discovering the murderer, Christopher uncovers a host of family secrets that forever change his world.

When Curious Incident premiered in London in 2013, it won 7 Olivier Awards (the equivalent of the Tony Award), more than any play in Olivier history. Two years later, it landed on Broadway and promptly won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play. The Huffington Post effused, “There are plays that illuminate , and plays that entertain, plays that bring us to an exalted new place. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time does all three. This is exhilarating, dynamic theatre which triumphantly expands the boundaries of theatricality”.

Players Circle Founder and Artistic Director Robert Cacioppo directs.

Harvey Evans plays Christopher Boone. Now residing in Cape Coral, the Leeds-London-born actor began his professional career playing Jem in To Kill a Mockingbird for Florida Rep (the theater that Cacioppo founded and ran successfully for 20 years).

Playing Christopher’s parents are popular local actors John McKerrow, who recently starred as Prsopero in The Tempest at Lab Theater, and Angela Watson, who starred in The Dining Room in Players Circle’s inaugural season and was one of the stars of TV’s Eight is Enough.

JoAnna Harmon plays Christopher’s beloved teacher Siobhan. Ms Harmon played various leads in Southwest Florida (The Bad Seed, Spiders Web, To Kill a Mockingbird and Moon Over the Brewery).

Rounding out the cast are some of Southwest Florida’s most popular actors: Thomas Marsh, Mitch and Joann Haley, Cantrella Canady, Brian Nahas and Betty Whitmore.

The set will be designed by 6-time Broadway Designer Ray Recht. Lighting Design is by Travis Richardson.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time runs for three weeks from February 16 through March 6.
